The short version: galvanised bins from places like Bunnings are cheap but corrode and aren't ideal for feed that gets damp. Plastic drums from chicken supply retailers work for a few years then crack or harbour smells. Simplehuman makes beautiful bins, but they're indoor pet cans, not chicken feed bins, and they max out at a third of our largest size. Our stainless steel bins are built specifically for the job, in sizes that actually suit a backyard flock, with a 3-year warranty and lifetime product support from the team in Merricks who use them every day.

  • Keeps feed 100% sealed and dry
  • Completely rodent and pest proof
  • Fully recyclable

About this bin

There's nothing more frustrating than discovering rats have got into your feed bag overnight, or pulling out a scoop of mash that's gone mouldy and as hard as rock from moisture. We've spent years recommending feed storage to our customers and we kept coming back to the same conclusion: nothing beats a properly sealed stainless steel bin.

So we found one. Three, actually.

Our stainless steel feed bins are made from 304 food-grade stainless steel, the same grade used in commercial kitchens and food processing. Unlike galvanised steel, 304 stainless won't react with damp feed or leach zinc into your chickens' food. Unlike plastic, it won't crack in the sun, absorb smells or gradually become a chew toy for determined rodents. And the four hook-on clamps, mounted on the bin itself, latch over the lid and pull it firmly down onto the silicone gasket to create a genuine water and airtight seal. Your feed stays as fresh on day 30 as it was the day you tipped it in.

Every bin is laser-engraved with the Talking Hens logo, has a D-ring handle in the centre of the lid, and two more D-ring handles on the sides of the bin for easy two-person carrying when full. The lid lifts off completely (no awkward hinges) so refilling and cleaning is straightforward.

Which size do you need?

Talking Hens Sustainable Layer is a mash feed, favoured by chickens for its texture and easier digestion. Mash is slightly less dense than pellets, so we've calculated capacity based on our own feed.

  • 40L suits keepers with 1 to 3 hens, or anyone who buys feed in our 20kg bags and wants a bin that fits one bag with a little room to spare.
  • 60L is our most popular size. It comfortably holds a 2 x 20kg bags of layer mash. It is ideal for flocks of 3 to 5 hens.
  • 80L is for serious keepers, breeders and anyone buying our discounted 5 x 20kg bulk feed. Holds 4 x 20kg bags. Suits 5 to 10 hens.

Not sure? Use our feed calculator to work out roughly how much feed your flock gets through, then pick a bin that holds enough to keep you going for a month or two.

Beyond chicken feed

Because these bins are food-grade and properly sealed, plenty of our customers use them for things other than chicken feed:

  • Dog and cat food (great for big-breed households buying 20kg+ bags)
  • Beekeeping equipment, wax and stored honey jars
  • Bedding and nesting materials kept dry in the shed
  • Bulk dry goods like flour, rice, pasta and grains
  • Garden seeds, fertiliser and bulb storage over winter
  • Emergency drinking water storage

What's in the box

  • 1 x Stainless steel bin with four hook-on lid clamps
  • 1 x Stainless steel lid with silicone gasket

Talking Hens 3-year warranty plus lifetime product support

We back every bin with a 3-year manufacturer's warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. If the gasket fails, a clamp breaks under normal use, or there's a fault with the steel or welds, we'll replace the affected part or the whole bin.

Beyond the warranty period, our lifetime product support means you can call or email us any time, for as long as you own the bin. Want advice on cleaning or maintenance? Just get in touch at talk@talkinghens.com.au or 0406 691 231, and we'll sort it out personally. No call centres, no forms, no fuss.
