Despite the name, the Polish is thought to have developed in the Netherlands, and crested chickens like her appear in Dutch paintings from centuries ago.

Polish hens lay small to medium white eggs, around 150 a year. They rarely go broody.

Her crest is her crowning glory, but it does limit what she can see. That means she can startle easily, so talk to her as you approach and she'll settle quickly. Trimming the feathers around her eyes can help too.

Because of that limited vision, Polish hens are best kept in a fully covered, fox-proof run rather than free ranging. Keep the crest dry in wet weather and check it regularly for mites.

With a little extra care, the Polish is a gentle, entertaining hen and a real talking point in any backyard.

Collecting your hens

Farm pick-up only

Live birds are collected from our farm at 3590 Frankston-Flinders Road, Merricks. We're open 10am to 4pm every day, including most public holidays.

We don’t deliver or post live birds. Please contact us before you visit so we can confirm the ages, numbers and availability.

We can provide secure, fully ventilated chick or chicken carriers able to safely transport three chickens in each. We’ll talk you through settling your new chooks in at home, and we’re only a phone call away afterwards.

Family Values

Both Giuliana and her husband Jason are from an educational background and love talking to and interacting with customers. Warmly welcoming families to the farm is always a joy and they love watching the excitement of children seeing the hens, often for the first time.

Supporting, encouraging, and providing best practice information to families is a priority along with answering any and all questions. Staff are thoroughly trained, friendly, and approachable so that they are able to provide expert advice and support for families both new and experienced in keeping backyard chickens.

Circular economy principles are at the heart of the business, with a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability, and environmentally-friendly practices. Working on new ways to produce high-quality products using hempcrete, recycled wood and 3D Printing with metal and plant-based plastics are just some of the materials and technology that the business has been using. Talking Hens is constantly searching for new, more sustainable practices, using locally made, high-quality, and recyclable materials wherever possible.
